Lesson 5 - Put Your Website Online
Get A File Transfer Program (FTP)
Now that you have created your web site page or
pages, you have to put it up on the internet so that everyone can find
it. To do that we have to "upload" (copy) the website you created
to you web hosting account at Blue
Host.
We could use NVU to do this but it's much more complicated than using a
special piece of file transfer software to upload files to your web
host. This will also make it easier when you have multiple
websites.
Click the link to download a free file transfer program called Filezilla.
Click on the version that will work with your computer's operating
system (Windows, Linux or Mac) and download Filezilla.
Upload Your Pages to the
Internet
Now that you have downloaded Filezilla,
we have to tell Filezilla
about our web hosting account so that it knows where to put the files
when we "upload" them.
Open Filezilla
and click File and then Site Manager. The following
window will open up. Click New
Site.
When you Click New
Site, the
window will look like the following picture. The red circles are
where we will enter information.

1 - Type a name for the
New
FTP Site (a short form of your website name will do fine)
2 - Enter the host - this will be your www.yourdomainname.com (don't
forget to change "yourdomainname" to the domain name you purchased)
3 - Select the Logontype "Normal"
4 - Enter the User Name that you used to set up your BlueHost account
5 - Enter the password that you used to set up your BlueHost account
6 - Click "Connect"
If you have everything completed correctly (as
described above) you
will see something like this:
There are several panes in the Filezilla
window. The top portion are commands to the server and you do not
need to worry about what this says (unless it says unable to connect -
then you have to go back and fix anything you may have entered
incorrectly in the above step).
The section on the left called Local Site is a view of your
computer. Directly below that is a list of the files in the
directory you have selected in the Local Site section. You will
navigate around your computer to find the file or files that you want
to
copy to the Internet web host server.
The section on the right called Remote Site is the web host machine
that you will copy your files to. You will always copy your files
to the directory "www" so double click on that file to open it (it
should be empty when you first start).
The bottom section is a status window. If you are uploading many
files at a time, you will see a list of those left to be
uploaded. We don't have to worry about this section.
Uploading:
To upload a file from your computer to the web hosts computer, you will
find the file on your computer using the navigation on the left side of
the screen. When you have found the file, you can double click on
it and it will be copied to the web hosts computer. You will see
it appear in the window on the right. Make sure that you have
uploaded the file to the directory www (if not, do it again, this time
double clicking on www before you upload the file from your computer).
Downloading:
Downloading is not something we will do in this exercise but just to
cover it here, it works exactly the opposite way. You copy files
from the right side (web host) to the left side (your computer) by
double clicking the file you want to download. You might
want to download a file if you have lost the file on your machine and
need to get it back off the Internet.
View and Test Your
Site on
the Internet
Congratulations! If you've gotten this far, you now have a
website on the Internet.
It's always a good idea to test your website once it is on the Internet
to make sure it works the way you expected.
To view your website on the Internet, open the Internet web browser on
your computer and type the address into the address bar. The
address of your website will be www.yourdomainname.com.
(obviously you have to change "yourdomainname" to your own domain
name).
Your website will appear. (If it does not, you may have uploaded
your web page to a directory on your web host other than www.)
To test your website, click each link on your website
to be sure that
it takes you where you expected it to (except any Google Ads - never
click on those). If there are errors in
your links, you will have to make corrections to your website and
upload it again.
When you have your website working properly, it is time to start
promoting it and getting traffic (and earning money!)
TIP - At this
point, it is important to have your links working and your ads set up
to work properly but please, don't get hung up on having the PERFECT
website before moving on. You can tweak your website at any time.
So long as your website is generally working and has most of the
content that you want on it then start promoting it!
